Jose Mourinho: Victor Lindelof needs time to adapt at Manchester United

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has explained that he will give Victor Lindelof time to adapt to English football following the defender's summer move from Benfica.

The boss has explained how Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic are already well versed in the Premier League and that is why they were able to make instant impacts in the 4-0 win over West Ham United.

As for Lindelof, he will be given time to settle at Old Trafford with Phil Jones and Eric Bailly starting at the back against the Hammers.

"I think Real Madrid [in the UEFA Super Cup] was too early for him," said Mourinho. "He played because Jones and Bailly were both suspended.

"I've had players coming from different leagues to the Premier League and, normally, it's not easy. It's different for Lukaku and Matic as they have had years and years in the Premier League.

"I brought Ricardo Carvalho to Chelsea in 2004 and he was a phenomenal defender, one of the best central defenders in the Premier League, but he struggled. It was difficult for him to come in and adapt in the beginning.

"I think Victor needs a little bit of time and he is going to have that time. Henrikh Mkhitaryan is not a defender but, last season, he needed his time too. So let's go step by step because Victor is a fantastic player."

Manchester United bossMourinho is convinced Manchester United will be stronger this season but is not getting too carried away.

"Many times last season we deserved to win and we didn't, so the fact we won the match was the most important thing," added the Portuguese, who will be desperate to improve on last season's sixth place in the top flight.

"I think the quality of our performance, based on the confidence levels, was really high but I am not going to say the performance was perfect because it wasn't perfect. We made our mistakes and have room for improvement, obviously.

What Manchester United need to improve after defeat.

Right wing issue continues Bordeaux's left-footed right winger Malcom was United's early January target before Alexis Sanchez became attainable. How to accommodate him in a Premier League fixture was the obvious quandary and Jose Mourinho did so by shifting Anthony Martial to the right flank, which was an obvious error. It was to Martial's credit he fashioned a couple of openings during the first-half horror show and he still spent the majority of it on the fringes, as the enterprising Sanchez troubled Tottenham with his darts across the attacking line. Jesse Lingard did not vindicate the decision to keep him behind Romelu Lukaku. Martial was the inevitable fall guy, given the Sanchez signing and Lingard's fabulous form. Lingard is perhaps the least talented of the trio and it was telling that at the start of the second half he was moved to the right and Martial occupied his favoured left wing berth. The irony is Martial was poorer ther...

Martial: Pogba can be world's best player

Anthony Martial believes his Manchester United team-mate Paul Pogba is “probably the best midfield player in the world”, who could become a Ballon d’Or winner within five years. Martial made that claim while speaking to MUTV last month for an upcoming documentary about Pogba, who has since made an excellent start to the season by scoring two goals and setting up four others in the consecutive 4-0 Premier League wins over West Ham United and Swansea City. The stage is certainly set for Pogba to enjoy a successful second season under Jose Mourinho's management, following a 2016/17 campaign that yielded 53 appearances, nine goals and three trophies.  Martial feels his friend has all of the physical and mental attributes that are needed to become the world’s best player, as he told us: “Paul is very mentally strong and he is very sure of himself. “He is a big guy, he is very technical on the ball and he has lots of endurance,” Martial continued. “I ...

Mats Hummels join with Manchester United player Juan Mata

Mata and Hummels will collaborate off the pitch Mats Hummels has followed Manchester United player Juan Mata's lead by pledging one per cent of his salary to charity. Bayern Munich defender Hummels, who came close to joining United in 2014, messaged Mata after it emerged the playmaker had decided to donate one per cent of his wages to football-based charities. "It's time to celebrate a great news for Common Goal because last week I got an unexpected message from my phone and I'm going to read it to you," Mata said in a video message. "'Hi Juan, this is Mats Hummels, just wanted to congratulate you on your Common Goal, fantastic project. Would be great to discuss with you and your team how I can get involved.' "So obviously after that I was really, really happy, I put Mats in contact with our Common Goal team, and he eventually joined. He's a new member of Common Goal so, again, it's a great day for football. W...
